How does a 15 year-old boy celebrate completing 27 months of chemotherapy treatments? If you’re Marc Normandeau, by holding a celebrity golf tournament to help raise money for the Montreal Children’s Hospital.
Normandeau, a Saint-Lazare resident, started The Marc Normandeau Fund in 2008 even though he had just found out the acute lymphoblastic leukemia he had successfully battled as a young child was back.
“The story is turning out to be a positive one… It looks like he has beaten this again and is looking forward to getting back to a normal life,” Marc’s father, Pierre Normandeau, said of the treatments his son recently completed.
Marc, an avid hockey and baseball player who maintains an honour roll grade point average at Westwood Sr. High, is spending his days helping his parents organize an Aug. 2 golf tournament and fundraiser.
The family hopes to raise $50,000 at the golf tournament, which will be added to $30,000 already in the fund.
Once enough has been raised, Marc will work with doctors at the Children’s Hospital to identify the top items on their wish-list.
“He wants to sit down with them because he’s seen firsthand how much is needed there,” Pierre said.
Major golfing event
Marc’s All-Star Celebrity Golf Tournament, a first annual event, will be held Aug. 2 at Whitlock Golf & Country Club in Hudson.
CJAD voice of the Habs and the Alouettes, Rick Moffat, will MC. Celebrity golfers include Senator Jacques Demers, Serge Savard and Gaston Gingras of the Canadiens, members of the rock band Simple Plan, Alouettes president Larry Smith, Alouette players Anthony Calvillo and Ben Cahoon, and NHL players André "Moose" Dupont, Jimmy Mann and others.
CTV sports announcer Randy Tieman will play, as will Pierre Gendron, local actor and comedian Joey Elias and Roger Brulotte. More help needed
Pierre says that, while the family is overwhelmed with the support it has received so far, they’re hoping at least 15 additional golf foursomes will sign on to play. Hope Sponsorships and corporate sponsorships are also available.
“The Title sponsor is AEM International and Roxboro Excavation, Jean Coutu pharmacies in Vaudreuil and Hudson and CJAD are really involved,” Pierre said, adding, Restaurant St-Hubert and Investors Group have sponsored holes thus far. “We have sponsorships from as far as Los Angeles, California from a Mercedes dealership that shipped us a child’s Mercedes convertible electric car for our silent auction.”
The event will kick-off on Aug. 2 with a 10 a.m. brunch. Marc’s foursome that will include Montreal Children’s Hospital Oncologist Dr David Mitchell and Joey Elias, will lead the way.
