David Laventure, director of the St. Lazare Sportsplex, which has an indoor ice rink as well as an indoor soccer field, says St. Lazare rents a total of 2,200 hours of ice time each year from the Sportsplex.
“The town signed a 10 year agreement and committed to renting that much ice time (from us) each year,” Laventure said, explaining, “They (then) rent it out to whoever they want. We have nothing to do with how they divvy the time up.”
Laventure adds there are about 5,000 available hours of ice time at the arena each year but everybody wants to same prime-time hours.
“I can fill the arena year round during evening hours and weekends, but it’s the off times that make it difficult to justify a facility like ours,” he said, referring to ice and soccer fields that sit empty most weekday mornings and afternoons.
He says the struggle for prime ice time on indoor rinks is not new.
