Just in time for Spring Break, the Vaudreuil-Dorion library is presenting a hip new front for teens, kids and families and says the library is the place to be these days.
Michel Vallée, new director of arts and culture services for the Vaudreuil-Dorion library joined staff, members of the municipal council and Mayor Guy Pilon last week when the town unveiled its 2010 program of events and activities in the library’s main hall.
“This is no longer a place run by the strict lady with a bun in her hair,” said
Vallée, who proceeded to peel off his own tie and affect a more relaxed demeanour while speaking with journalists.
Despite that, at least one young member knew protocol dictates that hushed voices be used in the place of reading.
A boy interrupted the press conference that took place during opening hours to request that Vallée and Pilon please be quiet since he was trying to read.
New events
Vallée says the 2010 program of events and activities will showcase the municipal centre as a great place to be for a variety of reasons.
“We want to make sure people know this is a fun and vibrant place,” he noted.
And a comfortable place thanks to more than a dozen vibrantly coloured beanbag chairs the library purchased from a Montreal company.
As of this month kids and parents who register can come to special story hours where kids will participate in activities and parents can attend a course designed to help them become better storytellers.
Residents will also get the chance to meet local authors such as Alexandre Désilets, who will attend a 45 minutes question and answer period on March 26.
There will also be a music concert in the library, says Vallée, adding, “Yes, a concert in the library!”
Beginning March 1 the program Backpack for Teens will get underway to help adolescents discover the centre and where teenage members will be given cloth backpacks.
Also beginning March 1, the library will unveil three different scavenger hunts that will see kids and parents discover a host of hidden treasures.
And finally, the town’s collection of music CDs and DVD movies will be available for members to borrow free of charge.
