Did you know?
L'Isle aux Tourtes was occupied for more than 2000 years by North American natives who bivouacked on its shores. The island undeniably offers an important strategic position. Located 1.2 kilometres from the northwest extremity of Montreal island, hugged in the west by the presqu'île de Vaudreuil and to the south by L'île-Perrot, the island dominates the river currents which, between Lake St. Louis and Lake of Two Mountains, reach the Ottawa River and the St Lawrence Seaway. In the 17th and 18th centuries, this zone was one of the principal commercial arteries of the colony and a theatre of intense military activity.
