With Earth Day activities taking place this weekend and next week,Vaudreuil-Soulanges MRC officials are asking residents to embrace a bold new step in their continued bid to reduce by 60 percent the amount of trash homeowners send to the dump each year - and they’re reaching out in a high-tech way to do it.
From now on recycling bin collection - done five days a week in the 23 Vaudreuil-Soulanges towns – will be completed by trucks equipped with robotic arms.
But in order for the long-arm of recycling to ensure that reusable materials enjoy another life, homeowners must comply with a few new rules when it comes to placing 240-litre or 360-litre wheeled recycling bins by the side of the road.
Recyclables left in 64-litre containers will no longer be collected, say officials.
Vaudreuil-Soulanges J’agis en Vert et pour tous pamphletes were recently mailed to all homes.
In them, residents were informed that the direction the cart’s two large, black wheels face is a big deal. The wheels must face the home, while the bin’s front recycling logo faces the street. Placing bins any other way will slow the recycling process for drivers who work alone.
Bins should sit at least one meter back from the curb or side of the road, and not be obstructed by cars or other objects that could block the mechanical arm.
Those with more than one cart should place them side by side, but leave at least 60 cm (2 feet) between bins.
Only items inside a blue bin will be collected. Extra recyclables such as large boxes should be stored until the next collection.
